Background Information
The French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (P.I.P) produced silicone gel filled breast implants for more than 30,000 patients in France and more than 50,000 British patients including up to 3,000 NHS patients who had reconstructive surgery following the removal of breast tumours.
It was then revealed that the French manufacturer PIP and Dutch company Rofil Medical had since 2001 used inferior, industrial grade, silicone in the breast implants they sold. Women in France were then advised to have their implants removed due to the risk of rupture which would then leak silicone into the bloodstream.
In March 2010 the French authorities alerted the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency) that they had ceased any distribution, export and use of the P.I.P gel implant. The MHRA immediately banned all use of P.I.P implants in the UK.
What happens if the implant has ruptured?
However, some patients have reported experiencing the following;
- Burning sensation, tingling, swelling, numbness or redness in or around the affected breast
- Hard lumps surrounding the implant or in the armpit
- A change in breast size or distortion
- Softening or hardening of the breast
- Pain or tingling down the arm
It is important to seek early removal of the breast implant and we would recommend speaking to your GP as soon as possible. The NHS have said that they will remove breast implants and not replace but at this stage it is important to protect your health and have the implants removed.
What if the implant has not ruptured?
Medical opinion at the present time is that the implants should be removed as they are unfit for purpose and carry a risk of rupture. There is a great deal of uncertainty and lack of knowledge about the extent of the problems. However by determining whether you have PIP and registering your interest in having them removed we can be ready to facilitate your claim for removal and replacement at the right time.
How do I know if I have a P.I.P Implant?
Contact us on 0845 676 9228 and we will write to your surgeon or clinic requesting that they identify the manufacturer. It is our view that medical records should be provided without delay and without charge however, the many clinics are now refusing to disclose patients notes without a charge and are refusing to give them to patients.
Some clinics are telephoning patients to advise them that they do not have PIP implants. Do not accept such telephone assurances. Speak to us today and get written confirmation of your implant status.
I have a P.I.P Implant what should I do?
If you think you have received a P.I.P implant you should
- Contact your GP as soon as possible.
- Call us on 0845 676 9228 to register your claim.
- Seek an ultrasound scan to determine if there is any implant rupture or problems with the silicone.
- Seek immediate removal if there is a rupture.
Compensation
The French manufacturer is no longer trading and the Government has not yet confirmed that a compensation scheme will be put in place.
We are seeking compensation from the clinics responsible for fitting substandard implants.
Even if your clinic no longer exists, it may be possible to seek compensation from the insurance company who insured them at the time the surgery took place.
